“Marianne au rouleau”, GOIN (by Vivienne)

This is a picture of a street art called the “Marianne au rouleau”.
It was created by Goin in 2019 for the festival Street Art Fest of Grenoble, so it takes place in this city and more precisely at la Place de la Republique in Saint-Martin-D’Hères.

Firstly, to understand this work, we have to know who is Marianne. She is very important for the French people as she is the national personification of the French Republic and of the values included in the French motto : Freedom, Equality, Brotherhood.

After that, we can now understand why the artist chose to make it on one wall of the Place of Republic of Saint-Martin-D’Hères.

Here, we can say that the roll is very important. Actually, it is situated at the top. It also highlighted by the movement of Marianne who hold up the roll with her right arm. Besides, the roll has its name included in the name of the work (in French “rouleau”). Moreover, all the work is in black and white except for the roll, and the paint, which are blue, white and red, the three colors of the French flag.

This work looks a lot like another work : La Liberté guidant le peuple (The freedom leading the people), a painting by Delacroix :

In Goin’s work, the flag is replaced by the roll, and the weapon by the paint. In the painting of Delacroix, Marianne is the freedom, so we can suppose that the Marianne of Goin also represent the freedom.

Consequently, Goin wants to advocate the freedom of expression. One of the way to express ourselves is to use the weapon that is the art.
