A FLOCK OF SHEEP

Place : Grenoble, rue Lafayette

It is a flock of sheep represented in black over a yellow background.

The artist used part of a wall where plaster is missing to transform it with an artwork. This representation is done in such a way that the spectator easily recognizes the flock.

The sheep is a famous character in children stories like The Little Prince of St Exupery or the cartoon Shaun The Sheep.

We may see this picture as satirical to express society flaw: we are all sheep and follow the flock. The artist used urban space as an opportunity to denounce society.

THE FOX

Place : Grenoble, boulevard du Maréchal Lyautey

The artist painted on the side of a building a huge fox which carries a book.

If  we look at the top of the picture, we can see a strange eye which may represent God in  my opinion. The fox legs, arms and nose are cut and show wood. The fox also has a  bird perched on a standing finger of its right hand.

The character of the fox is well  known in children books as a liar and cunning animal. However in this picture, it seems kind and friendly because of the tiny bird that is a delicate animal. This bird  may be the symbol of dream and liberty. The eyes of the fox are very strange as if they  were composed of several small eyes.

This artist worked to bring about beauty and dream.

THE THEATRE CLUB

Place : Grenoble, rue Hector Berlioz

This drawing is kind of an advertisement for the theater club as it is painted on  the metallic shutter closing the entrance to the theater club.

The artist used spray paint.  There is a variety of colors and lights that may represent the happiness of the club  members.

This work is exposed to the public with meaning and intend to draw people  to the theater club to practice.

VANDALISM

Place : Grenoble, Jardin de ville

Some people could name these tags « Street art”. In this case “Street art” is just  another word for vandalism or degradation/defacement.

These tags bring about these  questions: When do street art begins? When do vandalism stops? Could we call any  tag Street art? What is exactly street art? Is it only a way to convey a message in public  area such as walls, buildings or trains? Is it simply a way to criticize some aspects of  society?

 (I don’t think so.)

Street art is made with graphics and images that are spray  painted on walls, buildings, buses or trains with or usually without consent. Street art  is an unofficial and independent visual art that use creative imagination, technical  proficiency, beauty, emotional power, conceptual ideas... (In my opinion.) Street art  could comment on an aspect of society, convey a specific emotion or mood but it’s not  simply a form of communication. The tags in the picture are not well comprehended,  there is no imagination, beauty or colorful harmony and I wouldn’t call them street art.
