Banksy : The Undercover Activist

Banksy is a worldwide known street artist and activist who’s identity has been kept, for the most part, secret. Some rumors have been made about his background, but we do know for sure that he originates from Bristol, England.   He portraits through his art his outlooks on current political and social situations with anti-war messages like on his piece: “Rage, The Flower Thrower”; but also anti-capitalistic views expressed, for example on the “Shop Until You Drop in Mayfair” artwork, and also adding: “We can't do anything to change the world until capitalism crumbles” reinforcing this message.

As you may be able to tell by these pictures, Banksy utilizes his environment, the world, as his canvas. His goal isn’t for his art to make money, but to be seen and to be influential.

Banksy’s most notorious artwork is the “Girl with Balloon”, which was sold for 1,2 million at an auction. This made headlines over the world for more than just the price, right after it was declared sold, the painting was shredded as a way to address the overwhelming importance put on money in the art business instead of the actual art itself.
